The UM WISE Python Bootcamp is a summer day camp for students finishing grades 8 through 11 that introduces students to programming and computational thinking concepts in a fun and supportive environment.

This camp will be in person on the UM Ann Arbor Campus in 2024. Camp will be June 24-28, 9:00am-5:00pm. The application will open February 15 and will close on May 1.

The camp is geared towards students with no prior coding experience. The number of campers is limited to 30.

The camp is planned and taught by University of Michigan staff and students. In addition to hands-on coding activities, campers will participate in fun group competitions and meet computer science professionals to learn about CS careers.

FAQs

Can My Younger Child Apply?
Not at this time. We encourage rising 7th and 8th graders to apply to the Girls in Science and Engineering camp instead.

How Much Does it Cost?
UM WISE Python Bootcamp costs $450 for the week. It will be a challenging and fast moving introduction to programming with plenty of TAs available for one-on-one assistance.
This tuition includes 5 days of intensive instruction. Students will be provided with university computers during camp. They will have unlimited access to their code and their textbook when camp ends.

Need-based aid is available both through WISE (embedded in the camp application) or through the Watson Young scholarship.

When and Where is It?
UM WISE Python Bootcamp will be held in a UM computer lab on our Ann Arbor campus from July 24-28 from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM with the option for free early drop off or late pickup. Paid guest parking is available for students who drive themselves.

Who is Eligible to Apply?
You are eligible to apply for UM WISE Python Bootcamp if:

  • You will be in high school in fall 2024 (or recently graduated)
  • You have an interest in computer science, mathematics, technology, coding, or engineering.
  • You want to learn how you can support diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM.
  • You submit a complete application no later than May 1, 2024.

No previous experience necessary. This is an introductory course that may be too basic for students with a background in other programming languages.

How Will I Be Notified of Acceptance?
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. You will be notified by email. If the camp fills, you will be added to a waitlist and notified by email both when you apply and if you receive a spot in camp.

When Do I Pay?
Accepted students will be emailed instructions to make their tuition payment of $450 through check or credit card. You may pay at any time between when you are accepted and the closing date of June 1. The absolute last day to pay is Saturday June 1, after which your spot will be forfeit and given to someone on the waitlist.

If you have circumstances that require delaying payment, email umwisegise@umich.edu.

Cancelation Policy

If you are unable to attend camp, we will offer a full refund up through June 1. After June 1, we will charge a $100 penalty for giving up your place in the program. If you wish to discuss, petition to waive the fee, or request a refund, email me at umwisegise@umich.edu

If WISE is forced to cancel summer programming (due to public health concerns), you will receive a full refund within 2 weeks.
