Python Bootcamp

Summer camps will return in Summer 2022.  Please join our email list if you would like more information about our upcoming programs.

The UM WISE Python Bootcamp is a summer day camp for students finishing grades 8 through 12.

Python Bootcamp introduces students to programming and programming concepts in a fun and supportive environment. This year our camp will focus on Python. The camp is geared towards students with no prior coding experience. The number of campers is limited to 30.

The camp is planned and taught by University of Michigan staff and students. In addition to hands-on coding activities, campers will participate in fun group competitions, take field trips to UM labs and area businesses (past tours include Google, SPARK and UM robotics labs), and work with positive female role models. Our campers are chaperoned by WISE camp staff at all times.

Can My Younger Child Apply?
Not at this time. We encourage rising 7th and 8th graders to apply to Girls in Science and Engineering camp instead. If we have space, we will consider younger students finishing grades 6 and 7. Please check this page the last week in March, or email at that time.

How Much Does it Cost?
UM WISE Python Bootcamp costs $450 for a five-day session.
This tuition includes five full-days of program activities from 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM.  Lunch is not provided.  Students should bring a bag lunch every day.  All instructional costs, supplies, and equipment are included.

When and Where is It?
UM WISE Python Bootcamp will be held on the University of Michigan central campus in Ann Arbor in the Undergraduate Science Building, June 22-26, 2020.

Who is Eligible to Apply?
You are eligible to apply for UM WISE Python Bootcamp if:

  • You will complete grade 8, 9, 10, or 11 in June 2020
  • You have an interest in computer science, mathematics, technology, coding, or engineering
  • You submit a complete application no later than April 15, 2020

No previous experience necessary. This is an introductory course that may be too basic for students with a background in other programming languages.

While WISE GISE is open to eligible students of any gender identity, it is designed to encourage and support girls.

How Will I Be Notified of Acceptance?
Applications will be reviewed shortly after they are due in the middle of April.  All applicants will receive an email by May 1 to let them know if they have been accepted.

When Do I Pay?
Please do not send money with your application.  Accepted students will be asked to send a non-refundable tuition payment of $450 by May 15 through check or credit card. If you have circumstances that require delaying payment, email me and let me know.

Are Scholarships Available?
Not through WISE. If financing is a hardship, our other camp WISE GISE does offer need-based scholarships. You can apply for the  Center for Educational Outreach’s Watson Young scholarship on YouthHub.

Cancelation Policy

If you are unable to attend camp, we will offer a full refund up through June 1. After June 1, we will charge a $100 penalty for giving up your place in the program. If you wish to discuss, petition to waive the fee, or request a refund, email me at

If WISE is forced to cancel summer programming (due to public health concerns), you will receive a full refund within 2 weeks.
