WISE is a staff-led office that is working to fix the gender inequities in STEM at the University of Michigan. Although gender-minoritized individuals are earning STEM degrees from U-M at greater rates than we’ve seen in the past, there’s still lots of room for improvement. You might have found your way here because you are looking to connect with other STEM learners, searching for academic or professional development resources, hoping to help create change and support gender-minoritized STEM learners, or because your student organization wants to partner with WISE. Regardless of why, you are welcome here and we look forward to helping you succeed in STEM.
WISE programming is designed to support women and non-binary learners at the undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral levels but is open to all.
Programming
Online Programs
We’ve created an online hub to help you find the right office, workshop, or person to help – and not just when you’re struggling. The WISE Hub is designed to help you think about, plan, and find resources for six main areas of your life. We want to help you thrive at U-M and be prepared for what comes next. Joining the Hub means you’ll get information about WISE right in Canvas so it is easy to find.
WISE Events
WISE hosts over 80 events each academic year. Some events are designed to help you build a community at U-M, some are workshops created to help you academically, and others are networking or professional development events to prepare you for what comes after U-M. Our Science Success Series is geared more toward undergraduates where as our Grad Groups are for graduate students and postdocs.
Connection Opportunities
WISE Mentors
WISE Mentors are fellow students who are happy to connect with folx interested in WISE. Some Mentors serve as peer mentors and host office hours while others design and facilitate our social & networking events. Connect with them at our Mindful Mondays, WISE Advice, or WISE Night In events.
WISE Staff
WISE staff can meet with students to talk through some of the challenges gender-minoritized folx in STEM encounter. We aren’t academic advisors, so there are some questions we can’t answer, but we’re happy to help in whatever ways we can.
Support for Student Orgs
WISE has a variety of ways we support student organizations that align with our mission, including providing for funding for special events. Whether your club is specifically focused on gender equity in STEM or you simply highlight women in STEM in one of your programs or activities, we are here to help.
